Calgary Floods Force 75000 to Evacuate, Offices to Shut - Bloomberg

Police in Calgary, home to Canada's oil industry, ordered 75,000 residents to leave their homes and closed most of the downtown business district after heavy rains flooded parts of the city and corporate headquarters lost power.

Suncor Energy Inc. (SU), Canada's largest energy company by market value, was among businesses closing offices as workers were told to stay home and schools, bridges and roads were shut. The Bow and Elbow rivers, which meet near the middle of Calgary, surged from their banks into neighborhoods and were expected to remain high for several days after 4 inches (10 centimeters) of rain fell over two days. As many as 3 more inches are expected in the next 48 hours.

Calgary imposed a state of local emergency and began evacuations last night, according to the city's website. Residents also were advised to leave their homes in communities across southern Alberta, where rain-swollen rivers flowed east from the Rocky Mountains and flooded low-lying areas in the foothills and prairies.

'The Bow is moving higher and faster than I have ever seen in my lifetime,' Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi said at a media conference in the city. 'Avoid all travel that is not absolutely necessary.'

Nenshi said 75,000 people have been ordered evacuated and no injuries or deaths had been reported.

Downtown Evacuation

Calgary suffered its worst flooding in about a century in June 2005 when surging waters damaged 40,000 homes and forced the evacuation of 1,500 people, according to the city website. Water on the Elbow River last night was flowing more than three times faster than during the 2005 flood, Alberta Premier Alison Redford told reporters today.

In Calgary, police ordered the evacuation of downtown buildings, Bruce Burrell, director of the city's emergency management agency, said at a separate press conference. All of the city's bridges are closed, some are underwater and power is out in many downtown buildings, said Ryan Jestin, Calgary's director of roads.

All Calgary Board of Education and Catholic School District schools are closed and the city's light rail system, which connects the outlying suburbs with downtown, has been shut down.

Calgary's Scotiabank Saddledome, where events are scheduled to be held during the Calgary Stampede in two weeks, is flooded up to the 10th row, according to Trevor Deroux, the city's deputy police chief. Animals from the Calgary Zoo have been evacuated or moved to higher ground, he said.

Soldiers Dispatched

Fraser Logan, a Canadian Forces spokesman, said 1,200 regular troops from Edmonton were being deployed to southern Alberta. The first 600 arrived as early as 1 a.m., he said, with the rest traveling to southern Alberta towns of Kananaskis, High River as well as Calgary this afternoon.

The soldiers will provide humanitarian relief, conduct search and rescue missions and help with evacuation, while police will continue to be responsible for security, Logan said.

Chris Mauer, who works in institutional sales at Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, said he saw a deck that had broken off a house smash into a bridge over the Elbow River this morning in southwest Calgary.

The flood 'is going to be a big, big problem,' Mauer said in a telephone interview after trying unsuccessfully to drive to work this morning.

'Holding Back'

The Bow River was moving 1,500 cubic meters a second above the Bearspaw dam, Nenshi said in the press conference. That may climb to 1,700 cubic meters a second if upstream dams protecting the city are forced to release more water, he said.

'We're holding back as much water as we can,' TransAlta Corp. (TA), owner of dams upstream of Calgary, said on its Twitter page today. The company's headquarters in the city was under an evacuation order, it said.

Bearspaw Dam, owned by TransAlta, was built in 1954 on the Bow River primarily to reduce flooding in Calgary, according to the company website. It's the first of four TransAlta hydroelectric dams upstream of the city on the Bow.

Water on the Bow River rose to just below a Calgary bridge designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. Roads including Elbow Drive through the city's southwest quadrant have been flooded and much of the power to the central city was off, darkening buildings and traffic lights.

'Slowly Rising'

Peter Butler, a tourist from Massachusetts on a vacation to Canada's Rocky Mountains, was planning to leave the city to escape the floods.

'I think we're going to just fly to Vancouver, just try to get out of here,' he said from the Fairmont Palliser hotel, where staff had lit candles for lighting. 'It was a little bit alarming, going to bed and knowing the waters are slowly rising.'

Between 2 to 3 inches of rain will fall in southern Alberta in the next 48 hours, according to an updated Alberta government weather forecast released just before noon local time. The Bow, Elbow, Red Deer, Sheep, Highwood and Oldman rivers are experiencing 'massive increases in water levels,' the province said in a statement.

Most rivers west of Calgary reached peak levels overnight, but 'flooding danger and risks to personal safety remain extreme.'

Ten Inches

People in several other towns in southern Alberta were evacuated, including from High River, Okotoks, Black Diamond and from the ski resort town of Banff. The Bow River basin around Banff received 10 inches of rain since the morning of June 19 and people in a residential area of the city were ordered to evacuate, the city said on its website.

A low pressure system moved in off the Pacific and crossed the U.S. Pacific Northwest earlier this week, said Bernie Rayno, a senior meteorologist at AccuWeather Inc. in State College, Pennsylvania. The movement of the storm and the topography of the Canadian Rocky Mountains create 'ideal conditions' for heavy rain, Rayno said.

'Some areas in the mountains got 5 inches of rain in 24 hours,' Rayno said. 'Where is that water going to go? Down into the streams. Epic flooding is occurring in southern Alberta. This is as bad as it gets.' Rayno said the worst of the rain is probably over.

Company Operations

Flooding in Turner Valley, Alberta, a town southwest of Calgary, likely caused a natural gas pipeline owned by Legacy Oil & Gas Inc. to burst yesterday, the Alberta energy regulator said. Officials and the company said today the leak had been contained.

Suncor operations haven't been affected by the flooding, Sneh Seetal, a company spokeswoman, said by e-mail. Husky Energy Inc. (HSE) has closed some of its gas stations in the affected areas of Calgary and has asked only essential staff to be at work today, spokesman Mel Duvall said in an e-mail.

Crews are working to restore service to parts of the rail network of Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd. (CP), Canada's second-largest rail carrier, that have been affected by extreme weather, Ed Greenberg, a spokesman for the Calgary-based company, said in an e-mail.

Premier Redford planned to visit affected areas today, her office said in an e-mailed statement. Prime Minister Stephen Harper promised federal government support in rescue and recovery efforts. He is en route to Alberta to tour the flood damage, Andrew MacDougall, his director of communications, said in a Twitter message.

The flooding won't have a substantial effect on Alberta's crops, James Wright, a risk analyst with Agriculture Financial Services Corp., said today in a phone interview from Lacombe, Alberta. There aren't a lot of crops grown in the affected areas, he said.

Christian Roman, a 27-year-old plumbing apprentice, was stranded downtown on his way to work in the city's northeast quadrant because of transportation disruptions.

'Everything seems to be in disarray,' Roman said.

Ed Sheeran says he has settled in Nashville, Tennessee - BBC News

Ed Sheeran's debut album + reached number five in America's Billboard Chart

The British singer/songwriter has confirmed that he moved to Nashville, Tennessee, in February settling just outside a town in a rural area.

Sheeran, 22, said he wanted to live somewhere that incorporates music, countryside and a relaxed atmosphere.

"Nashville is full of very, very nice people," said the A-Team singer.

I don't think people really care in Nashville. Even if they knew who you were, I don't think they'd care. They'd just be like, 'Eh'

Ed Sheeran

The city is already home to some of country music's top stars and acts from the pop and rock world including Taylor Swift, where he wrote a duet with her.

Jack White and the Black Keys are among artists who have moved to Nashville, also known as Music City, in the last few years.

Speaking to Newsbeat at the Brit Awards in February the singer said: "I think it's important to give the UK public a little bit of a break.

"I've been here for a long time doing TV and radio so I'm going to go over there and make the album and tour for a bit."

He said that he's "got the songs" for a follow-up to 2011's +, which reached number five in America's Billboard 200 Chart.

Ed Sheeran says he's recording some of his second album in Nashville

Ed Sheeran says that unlike Los Angeles and New York, Nashville doesn't have paparazzi on the lookout for celebrities.

"I don't think people really care in Nashville," he said.

"Even if they knew who you were, I don't think they'd care. They'd just be like, 'Eh.'"

The multi-million selling artist said his new home reminds him of Framlingham in rural Suffolk, where he grew up.

Sheeran recently performed at the Grammy Awards with Elton John and was at the CMT Music Awards last week to introduce Lady Antebellum.

"I love America," Sheeran said on the CMT red carpet. "I've been here for a long time, though. So I'd like to get back to England at some point.

"I'd say [I've been] 90% in America since January 2012. Long time.''

Strapless Gown Formal Evening Party Special Occassion Long Maxi Dress, Medium, Leopard Purchaser Reviews
Bea-U-tiful dress wore on my anniversiary back is kinda see through ;) so wear a slip or go comando :0 but I'm not a size 6 but I sure looked like one if u don't have an hourglass shape this dress will give u Sexiest dress I've ever owned - Stephanie C
- Dizc0nb0bul4t3d

I was so thrilled when I first put this dress I ordered it in the royal blue and It looks even better in person than it does in the When I first ordered it I thought there was a chance of it looking less than classy (thanks to the busty model) but on my smaller frame it looks really I'm also putting a black ribbon around the waist to give it that extra little If you're tiny like me (5'2", size 0-2) and looking for an inexpensive gown this is definitely the dress for It's true that this dress is on the long side but it's nothing my 5 inch platform pumps can't
- Jennifer />
I wore this dress for a New Years Celebration, and it was a hit! I got so many compliments and it fit I have a small figure to begin with, but it made me look more slim and much more fuller in places I really am not, I highly recommend this for any type of big bash you have coming up!
- Charlet Wintercorn

I bought this dress in red and all I have to say is wow! I'm a size 2/4 and ordered size I am going to wear it to my husband's Seabee Ball and received it the very next day I ordered it,even though I didn't ask for next day The material isn't the greatest, and rousching and draping doesn't look exactly the same as the model, but if you play with the dress in front of the mirror for a little bit, you can get it to lay almost exactly the The other thing I was worried about is if it was see It is not as bad as I thought it would You really can't tell, especially in artificial lighting, which our event is during the evening so I'm not too worried about Overall its a beautiful dress and with my accessories it looks amazing!! Be aware though, it's not a zip up, its just a stretchy material gown,so if you have wide hips a larger size may be But overall this is a gorgeous dress and all my husband and friends kept saying is how hot it looks on me! I would recommend this to Its beautiful, and the length is just perfect, no hemming required!
- Seabee wife

I bought this dress it fits amazing, the length is great for that elegant look the material is stretchy if you have a tummy it will hid it perfectly trust me I am 7 months pregnant and a well shaped woman of color and it looked amazing imagine if your not shipping was great overall I will shop from mall 24/7 and purchase hot from Hollywood items alot I got my dress on the exact date I needed it for and my shipping preference was there was a 10 star I would give 9 to you and take away 1 for the postal service you use they need to have better tracking of product and info saying delivered but not saying it is signed makes no sense and a package staying in there post for 7 days needs to be fixed other than that great job
- Crawford

The gown was very cheap looking and not at all as the picture would say it It didn't fit me in length and when I sent for my return merchandise label all my request were I am still in possession of this item given the company, hot hollywood, does not stay true to their company policy regarding I will never in life order from them and should I know of anyone who is considering doing so I will do everything in my power to change their DispleasedEB from Illinois

This dress is a fantastic fit! It does fit a little snug (I'm an XS but the S fit great) but the way it's structured and hugs curves was very The dress also arrived very fast!
- magicjewel "Amber Carrier"

So! I came across this dress on I was invited to a ball on Tuesday and wanted/needed something simple, yet elegant (and with speedy shipping since the ball is this I had my reservations about purchasing the I don't hate to sound catty, but the model wearing the dress did not make it Almost trashy Plus, I am about 5'4, 5'5, 145 lbs, 34 DD, and was scared I would be "spilling out" out of my dress for lack of a better received the dress today, and I must say for $40, I am quite impressed! Let's look at it from all angles:- Length: Again, I'm between 5'4 and I tried it on without shoes and it just grazed the I pretty sure once I try it on with heels, I'll have no problem at I also like how it sways when you Fit: I am 145 lbs (okay, maybe pushing 150 lbs), but the medium fit Just so you have an idea, I wear about a 5-7 in juniors, maybe a 4 or 6 in It is snug, but it's the kind of snugness that you want, not the "I have to suck in my stomach just to pull this dress I'm top heavy, but I definitely was not popping out of the dress as the model was in her I tried it on with a bra and without a bra, and both ways looked nice (though I would definitely wear petals of course if choosing to go bra-less!) As mentioned in the other reviews, the ruching around the stomach is Definitely a necessity if you're uncomfortable with your It's quite Material: Another complaint that I read in other Okay, I LOVE fashion and LOATHE things that look Yeah, the material isn't "top-notch", but you won't look cheap in the I've bought dresses from boutiques that cost wayyyy more and were made of the same Plus, the fact that the material stretches is That way it clings nicely to your shape than a dress made of a different material I couldn't tell if it was as see-through as people said (terrible lighting in my room), but I believe it's nothing black undergarments/slip couldn't can't wait to wear it! It'll be very easy to dress up (I got the black dress, so I'll be doing silver shoes, drop rhinestone earrings, and a simple rhinestone necklace) and it's something I plan to wear Oh, the little gift and wrapping was Will order from them :-)
- citychic "karmelkomplxion"

Well, I got this dress because of how beautiful it looked on the huge boobed super skinny I'm a generous so I got it but I wasn't completely sure on the Sadly, generous was the biggest It was definately skin It wasn't quite ruched the way it appeared It looked like it was made of better material but the material does believe Well, I went ahead and kept mine because I'm working on losing weight so maybe I can get into it better(it subdue fits, it's just a little To sum up, if you have even the slightest doubt about the size get a bigger In fact that force be a good rule in general including this If you grind a small, get a medium, medium, get a Generous-lose weight or suck in a

Credibility Crunch for Tech Companies Over Prism - Wall Street Journal

By AMIR EFRATI, SHIRA OVIDE and EVELYN M. RUSLI

With Silicon Valley's credibility in protecting consumer privacy on the line, many of the largest Web companies on Friday emphasized they aren't giving the U.S. government a direct pipe into their networks as part of a secret program to monitor foreign nationals.

But the denials of involvement by Google Inc., Microsoft Corp. and others, which come at the same time the Obama administration confirmed the existence of such a program, raised questions about how data is ending up in the hands of the government.

The issues are especially acute for companies who make their business by collecting and processing customers' most personal data and secrets.

Google CEO Larry Page and Chief Legal Officer David Drummond said in a blog post that the company doesn't give U.S. government investigators "open-ended access" to its network and hadn't "joined" a program known as Prism and run by the National Security Agency.

The executives said Google only hands over data based on legally-authorized requests that it reviews individually.

U.S. officials briefed on the matter said Friday that the NSA receives copies of data through a system they set up with a court order. They don't have direct access to the company computers, those people said.

Companies including Apple Inc., Facebook Inc. and Yahoo Inc. all specified in some way that the government doesn't have "direct access" to their networks. But they didn't say whether the government may be indirectly siphoning user information'including subject lines of emails and photos stored online'through an intermediary in response to secret court orders.

One former government official and cybersecurity legal expert said the companies are likely carefully parsing their words. This person said it is likely that the government is able to get copies of data in real-time or near real-time without accessing the Internet companies' central servers.

The Internet companies didn't answer questions about these potential side doors into their data.

Google and Microsoft release regular reports that outline the number of government requests for user data per year, but such reports don't include the kind of court-ordered requests made by the NSA for its surveillance of foreign nationals. Such requests prohibit the recipients from disclosing them.

U.S. officials also shed little additional light on how the program works on Friday. The National Security Agency referred questions about Prism on Friday to the office of the Director of National Intelligence. Representatives for the office didn't immediately respond to questions.

Federal law-enforcement agencies can issue data-disclosure orders to the tech companies under the FISA Amendments Act, a law that permits the government to obtain surveillance orders from a special court without warrants on specific people.

The orders compel companies to provide data, such as the content of emails, files and photos, stored online.

The technical mechanism through which the tech companies comply with foreign-surveillance orders is unclear.

One industry executive familiar with the handling of data requests from U.S. intelligence agencies said companies have set up ways to cope with the volume of data by automating parts of the process. This method would allow data to be funneled to intelligence agencies without the need for manual steps by company employees.

Agency personnel, this person said, are likely to have the capability to conduct informal searches through company data to help narrow searches associated with particular individuals and aid in crafting formal data requests.

Internet giants have been repeatedly accused of funneling information about their users to the U.S. and other governments.

Two years ago, Julian Assange, the editor in chief of Wikileaks, called Facebook an "appalling" spy machine during a media interview, adding that he believed the social network, Google and Yahoo had "built-in interfaces for U.S intelligence."

In a comment at the time, a Facebook spokesman said, "There has never been a time we have been pressured to turn over data."

Obama administration officials stressed Friday that the NSA surveillance program focuses on foreign nationals, not Americans. But for companies like Facebook'which counts roughly 80% of its monthly users outside the U.S. and Canada'the disclosure of surveillance on foreign nationals raises its own problems.

A backlash, privacy advocates warned, may be particularly strong in Europe, where governments and citizens have been more sensitive to privacy issues.

Following the disclosure, some European lawmakers and regulators seized the opportunity to reiterate their commitment to protect privacy. German Justice Minister Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger told daily newspaper Die Welt that "German citizens don't want their data to automatically end up with American authorities. It's good and necessary for the U.S. to rethink its antiterror legislation."

In the Middle East, where some governments have recently tried to restrict Internet access and use technology to crackdown on protesters, , the reaction was more muted. "I'm not shocked the U.S. has a very strong spy apparatus. I'm surprised they're careless enough to let it come out," said Wael Eskandar, an Egyptian blogger and activist.

The privacy questions also come at a time when Internet companies are trying to wedge themselves deeper into daily lives around the world. In Silicon Valley, data has become invaluable currency, to serve better ads, prod users to spend more time on services, and create a competitive advantage against rising upstarts.

"Here we are in the world of big data, and we know they can record every single thing," said Michael Pachter, a Wedbush Securities analyst.

What You Need to Know About LinkedIn Profile Pictures - Boston.com

Q. I have learned I need a LinkedIn profile to conduct an effective job search; I have my jobs, education and even one reference from my old job on my profile. Some people say I need a picture, but doesn't that just set me up to be too old, too fat or just not right for the job? I'd rather put in a symbol or leave it empty.

A. Congratulations on recognizing the value of LinkedIn for a job search. LinkedIn has a massive user base and according to its reports, a new member joins every two seconds. Before people meet you, they want to do an initial assessment of what skills you bring, your educational background and anything else which might offer a compelling reason to meet. Recruiters, hiring managers and networking contacts are also looking for some commonality in other connections and what your references have to say; and yes, they want to 'see' who you are in person via your picture.

Your LinkedIn profile is your professional presentation and your picture is part of that. Leaving the 'ghost,' or the shadow that shows no photo has been added, indicates an incomplete project; that is not the message you want to provide to potential employers. Adding a great photo enhances your online brand and makes you more approachable to initial contacts. To make sure that happens, you need to select the right picture.

The right LinkedIn picture is a current photo of the professional you. Unless you wear a tux in your everyday job, do not choose a picture of you in a tux, or a wedding dress or a bathing suit. You also don't want to have a piece of someone's arm around you from a photo you cropped. If you are in a creative field, feel free to have a super close up that has an artsy appeal, but most people should have a head shot on a day you look your very best. Make sure your hair looks good, you are making eye contact and you have a real smile. Your attire, makeup and jewelry should be professional and not too overwhelming that any attention is dawn away from you.

Ask your professional colleagues for feedback. Make sure you don't look dated, there is no glare in your glasses, you aren't wearing sunglasses and as your closest friends would say, 'You look as good as you can.'

Anything else in the photo makes a statement, but is it the statement hiring managers are looking for?. Profiles of a person wearing a cowboy hat may play in other geographic areas, but are a topic of speculation in Boston. Symbols or clip art are also questionable. What is the message? Is your profile an advertisement for a business, or a more personal statement? LinkedIn is the professional site. If you want to showcase other skills ' you on a surf board or riding a horse, Facebook has a place for those.

So, start taking potential profiles pictures, get feedback and use it to complete your professional profile.
